    A Picota, com os seus 774 metros, é o segundo ponto mais alto do Algarve e um dos mais deslumbrantes.

    Aqui, vale a pena parar, respirar fundo e deixar que o olhar percorra os 360° de paisagem: serras ondulantes e até o Alentejo ao longe, se o dia estiver limpo. É uma sensação mágica de quase tocar as nuvens.

      The ascent leads through shady eucalyptus forests.

      The view on clear days is fantastic.

      From the summit you can see the entire Algarve coast and the Serra de Monchique in a 360° panorama.

      Be careful when climbing - there are sometimes free-roaming, highly aggressive guard dogs near farms.

      I recommend that everyone takes pepper spray with them on the tour

        The hike is very nice. Unfortunately I had to start the way back at km 6.6 because the path leads close to a house and the free-standing, waist-high dog of the landlord did not want to let me past. It's a shame.

          Great panoramic view to the sea in the south. Nice climb on small paths from Monchique. You can either follow the markings of the "Via Algarviana" (red/white) or the circular hiking trail "Caminho Caldas - Picota" (yellow/red). The path leads past farms and through shady cork oak forests.
          The descent to Caldas de Monchique leads mainly along farm tracks and small roads that offer little shade. But it is definitely worth it because of the great views and the beautiful vegetation.
          From Caldas you can either hike directly back to Monchique (although this will add up to a few kilometers and meters in altitude) or take the bus.

              We did the tour the other way round. So the ascent was our descent.

              We can only confirm the problem with the aggressive dogs; we had to let a car drive us past a dog because we were barking, growling and slightly followed from a distance.

              In addition, part of the ascent is currently severely affected by deforestation, a very unpleasant part, the path is no longer recognizable.

              Nice round, but parts should be enjoyed with caution and you have to ask yourself whether you would rather follow the standard hiking trails.

                        I have done the tour from Caldas de Monchique twice. Once in 2017 and now again in 2020. It is a very beautiful tour. However, the landscape, which is still beautiful, has understandably changed a lot after the forest fires. There are hardly any shady passages anymore, which makes the climb from Caldas de Monchique particularly difficult on hot days.
                        Unfortunately, I had to stop the tour in 2020 about 2 km before the summit and turn back because the problem with the highly aggressive dogs still exists and makes Portugal increasingly unattractive as a hiking destination for me. I am usually alone and the dogs are not deterred by a single person. You shouldn't put any hope in the dog owners in such situations either, as they are usually not there. Locals advise throwing stones or lemons(!) in such situations. But that is out of the question for me.
                        The signage of the path is good to satisfactory.
