    The well-preserved Pulverturm (mill tower) is located near the Südwall. This is an approximately 18 meter high corner tower of the old city wall. The tower was built around 1550 (...a wall thickness of up to 2 meters inside). From the 17th century until 1865 it served as a mill tower for a windmill. Parts of the restored city wall border directly on the tower, which means that the powder tower was the only one of the 4 corner towers that was directly integrated into the city wall.

      "... Orsoy became a customs place in 1420. During this period (end of the 14th century to 1438) the 8 meter high city wall was built, as well as the new buildings of the Kleve Landesburg (between 1425 and 1441) and the city parish church (15th century). The four cross-shaped main streets of the village were inhabited by farmers, Rhine fishermen, and a few merchants and craftsmen of the textile industry.
      In the 16th century, Orsoy was expanded into a fortress with five bastions according to plans by the famous Pasqualini family of Renaissance architects. During this time, the site was almost completely destroyed by arson in 1585 and rebuilt over the leveled masses of rubble at a level about 1.5 meters higher with a possibly regularized road network. In 1598 the bastion ring was completed. It was supplemented by the Dutch in 1633/1640 by adding four ravelins.
      With the conquest of the city by the French under Louis XIV in 1672/73, the dismantling of the castle and fortress, the resettlement of many residents to Holland with the demolition and dilapidation of numerous houses, the town faced decades of squalor. The town and economy only recovered in the course of the 18th century thanks to support from the Prussian state. ..."
