Traditionally, people camped beneath Ubirr’s cool rocky shelters and used the plants and animals of the nearby floodplain and East Alligator River. The smooth stone surfaces were perfect for painting.

Ubirr hosts some of the world’s most outstanding rock art and is one of the reasons for Kakadu’s dual World Heritage status. Most of the x-ray paintings in this gallery are from the freshwater period, within the last 1,500 years, although some older layers date back somne 5000 years. The paintings show the abundant foods available in the area round Ubirr.
It is interesting to learn that painting was not primarily about the picture as a result as such, but rather the process of storytelling was important.
Temperatures yesterday were around 39c, so it pays to choose the time of day of a visit thoughtfully.
