Come and discover a watermill that is more than 650 years old, beautifully situated in a wooded area. During the mill's opening hours you can see how it works and how linseed is used to produce oil. The experienced millers will be happy to answer all your questions and tell you everything about the process. Best of all, admission to this historic site is free, but a voluntary contribution is greatly appreciated.

A watermill of more than 650 years old

In the Noordmolen on the Twickel estate near Ambt Delden, oil is extracted from linseed (flax seed). This happens in three operating corridors (see photos above).

The first operation is the crushing of the linseed, this is done on the roller conveyor. The edging stones crush the linseed into linseed meal. The ironer sweeps the splashing seed back under the stones. Once the seed has been sufficiently crushed, the miller lowers the runner and opens the slide, through which the linseed meal falls into the flour bin.

The second operation is heating the linseed meal. Heating is done on the fist. This is a firebox constructed from sandstone covered with a steel plate. There is a bottomless pan on top in which the linseed meal is heated to approximately 40 degrees. When the flour has heated up, the miller slides the pan with its contents over the funnels, after which the flour falls into the two suspended bags (bags).

The third line of business is oil mining. This oil beating takes place on the press bench (beating bench). The bulbs are placed here between a pressing board and then placed in the pressing bench. By means of a falling hammer we hit the hammer downwards, which puts pressure on the linseed meal. This liquefies, causing the oil to be squeezed out of the bulb.

During opening hours the mill is in operation and oil is being minted. The millers provide text and explanations about, among other things, the operations described above.
