After new boreholes were dug to provide better water, the Dessau city architect and architect Paul Engel began building a second water tower in 1896, the New Water Tower on Lutherplatz, which was completed in 1897. The water tower, built in the eclectic style, is still a widely visible landmark of the city today and is located in the southwestern extension of the city.[2] In 1919, a pilot overlooked the weather vane, hit it with his biplane and crashed into Friesenstraße.[1]

After the reconstruction of the municipal waterworks in 1930, the two water towers in Dessau were no longer needed.[3] In contrast to the elementary school III in the immediate vicinity, also called the "Luther School" by the people of Dessau because of its location on Lutherplatz, the water tower was largely spared from the Allied air raids on Dessau on March 7, 1945.[1][4]

Already exposed to decay during the GDR era and threatened with demolition in the 1970s to make way for a four-lane road, the New Water Tower survived thanks to a lack of financial resources. However, there were also projects in the 1980s to renovate and expand the tower, which also failed due to a lack of money. The tower was to have intermediate floors so that the resulting floors could accommodate different uses.[1][5]

In February 1995, the New Water Tower was added to the city of Dessau's list of monuments as an individual monument.[6] In 1996, the water tower was sold to a private investor. The investor planned to renovate the tower and install catering facilities and offices in order to use the water tower as the new company headquarters.[1] After the water tank was removed, however, the construction work ended and the tower became increasingly dilapidated. Large holes were found in the roof in particular. On December 16, 2005, the lightning ball crashed into the roof. In order to protect the water tower from further deterioration, to restore its exterior as faithfully as possible to the original and to preserve it permanently through cost-covering use, the "Association for the Promotion and Preservation of the New Water Tower e. V." was founded on October 26, 2006, and took over the water tower on July 5, 2007.[7][8][5]

Since the association is dependent on donations and funding - for example from the German Foundation for Monument Protection or the "Urban Reconstruction East" program - the renovation can only be carried out in small steps and is supported by fundraising campaigns.[6][9][10] In March 2009, the renovation of the tower roof began. The most necessary work was completed in time for winter, thus protecting the tower from further deterioration. In 2010, the renovation of the bay towers began, but had to be stopped after parts of the console cornice fell.[3] In 2012 and 2013, the lantern and 2 of the 4 bay towers were renovated with donations and funding.[11][12]

In May 2014, parts of the facade fell again, so that security had to be created before work could continue in 2015. During this time, the roof was again damaged by storms.[13][8] After further security measures, an art exhibition was opened in the water tower on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the water tower.[14] Further events and exhibitions in the water tower followed.[15]

Since 2017, the steel staircase has been restored to accessibility by setting up sponsorships for the steps.[16][17] In addition, the two remaining bay towers were renovated in 2016 and 2017 and further windows were replaced and exposed.[18][19] In 2019, the entrance door was replaced.[20] The staircase, which previously ended in nothing, was given a final level with a walkway at a height of 20 meters in 2020 and this was given additional security in 2021.[21][22][23]

The water tower is 63.50 m high. The raised tank of the new water tower had a capacity of 1100 m³. The base diameter is 17.00 m inside and 22.00 m outside.[1][6] The windows are mostly neo-Gothic in design, cornices and friezes provide a horizontal structure. The water tank was expanded in the 20th century.[18] While the lower floors are round, the upper area is octagonal. The main portal is round-arched and can most easily be assigned to the neo-Romanesque style. It is decorated with several friezes and a coat of arms stone and bears the year 1896. The water tower on Lutherplatz is registered as an architectural monument in the monument register with the number 094 40114.[24]

After the roof and the turrets and windows have been restored, the association is now using donations to install a circumferential viewing platform path of 1.50m in the tower at a height of 20m. This would make the first public use possible as a lookout tower, because at the moment it can only be visited at the open house and events.
