History - Karl Friedrich Aust Winery, Radebeul, Saxony
1995 was a time of optimism. I was just 17 years old at the time. These were the years before the renewed success of Saxon viticulture and Saxon wine. The big drivers of Saxon wine quality that are known today were just practicing their first small quantities. The renovation of the Schloss Wackerbarth winery was not yet thought of. The prince, who later got back a former residence in the Lippes, Proschwitz Castle, was ridiculed because of his plans to establish red wine here in the area. Old winemakers frowned, some wine was poured into the spittoon or into the flower box at the bar in the Schoppenstube in the Hoflößnitz with the comment “too sour”. This was a central meeting point for Saxon winemakers, where samples from the area were brought and tasted, praised and occasionally even snubbed.
