The small town of Schöllenbach is divided into two parts, Hessisch-Schöllenbach, which belongs to Hesse, and Badisch-Schöllenbach, which belongs to Baden Württemberg.
The so-called Evangelical "spring church" is located on the Euterbach, later called Itterbach and from Gaimühle just called Itter.
It was built in the middle of the 15th century under the Erbacher Schenken Philip IV and consecrated in 1465. It developed into a frequently visited Marian pilgrimage site, especially for pilgrims who passed it on the way from Mainz to Walldürn. At that time it was possible to descend from the chancel to a spring. The water was said to help with eye problems and childlessness.
After the Reformation, the church slowly fell into disrepair. In the 18th century, the nave was then demolished, only the portal, which forms the current entrance to the churchyard, remained. In 1782 the choir was closed, which now forms the interior of the church.
The carved altar, which was built in 1539 by Countehepar Eberhard XIII. was donated by Erbach and Maria von Wertheim, is now in the St. Hubertus Castle Chapel in Erbach Castle.
The spring, which was previously accessible via the chancel, now emerges from under the southern churchyard wall and feeds a former washing area. Then it pours into the flowing Euterbach. The spring was dedicated to St. Ottilie.
