Askersund was granted city rights in 1643, but since the Middle Ages there has been both a marketplace and a church. The country church of Askersund is beautifully situated on a hill above Vättern, just outside the town center of Askersund. The history of today's rural church is closely linked to the Oxenstierna-Soop family, who built the manor house Stjärnsund in 1637 a few kilometers south of Akersund. When the medieval wooden church was destroyed by fire, the Oxenstierna-Soop family paid to build a new church, which was completed in 1670.
