It is noteworthy that in Ingolstadt, in addition to the almost completely preserved medieval city walls, the structures from the later phases have been preserved, if not completely, then at least to a significant extent, thus providing a vivid impression of how the city was shaped by the fortifications at that time. Since the post-war thesis that the remaining fortifications should be erased from the cityscape was abandoned, and since then, the neoclassical fortifications in particular have been restored and put to new uses, it remains to be hoped that this attention will also be paid to the outworks and remaining ruins of the later phases.
