The Nishi Honganji Temple is the older of the two twin temples of Honganji. It was built in 1591 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi after the destruction of the former main temple in Osaka.

"Nishi Honganji" is the main temple of the Honganji faction of the Jodo-Shin sect, with over 10,000 sub-temples across the country and 200 temples overseas.

Nishi Hongan-ji Temple is the grand head temple of the Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land) school of Buddhism and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto. It is renowned for preserving some of the city's finest examples of opulent Momoyama Period (16th Century) architecture, as much of the complex survived later fires. Key features include the massive Goeido (Founder's Hall), the majestic Amida Hall, and the highly ornate and intricately carved Karamon Gate, often called the "All Day Gate" because one could spend all day admiring its detailed artistry. The temple offers a profound and peaceful encounter with Japanese Buddhist tradition and historical architecture.
