The Lomond Hills rise up up out of the patchwork landscape of Fife and hikes up Bishop Hill transport you, in very little time, to fantastic viewpoints. Sitting north west of Glenthrothes and north east of beautiful Loch Leven, hiking trails allow you to ramble all day long in these intriguing hills, admiring the conical peaks of West and East Lomond.

Unlike the two cones, Bishop Hill is sprawling and very different depending on which side you hike from. The east is gentle and allows for a relaxed ascent past plantations and farmland. In contrast, the western side is a steep escarpment that surges abruptly from the fields below, on the edge of Loch Leven..

A natural viewpoint for sweeping scenery across central Scotland

For the best views in the shortest possible time, beginning your hike from Scotlandwell to the east of Loch Leven is a great idea. This village is very literally named, so stop by the historic well if you’ve got time. Walk up through Kilmagad Wood and, upon exiting it above, the views will already be stunning to the west. Loch Leven, with its castled island, is endlessly breathtaking.

The car park at Holl Reservoir is another good starting point, setting you in the middle of the Lomond horseshoe. Walk west to reach Bishop Hill via its gentle side, leaving the extraordinary westward views until the very last moment. You can continue northwards to return via Glen Vale and the Harperteas Reservoir.

The Lomond Hills make for fantastic winter hillwalking territory in clear weather and summer provides glorious verdant landscape in every direction. Bishop Hill reaches just 1,512 feet (461 m) at its highest and rarely gets into challenging weather conditions.

You’ll find plenty of accommodation and restaurants in the area with Kinross and Glenthrothes being the nearest large settlements.

  • Commanding views all around on a clear day, easily see the iconic Forth Rail Bridge and Queensferry Crossing and East and West Lomond Hills. If you visit on a day with spirited winds you're also likely to catch a glimpse of a glider or two which is a real treat especially when the local birds join in.
