Hopen Castle stands there as if enchanted, surrounded by a moat, ancient oaks, and beeches in the middle of the Hopen town forest.

One of the most important architectural monuments in the town of Lohne has experienced a varied and exciting history. Built in the 16th century by Count Herbort von Dinklage, Swedish and Hessian soldiers burned down the buildings of the outer bailey during the Thirty Years' War. In 1780, the current two-story, solid manor house was expanded and extended. The former castle tower collapsed into the moat in 1825, and the drawbridge was demolished in 1880, along with an extension around 1900.

The old castle has seen many owners. From 1591 to 1793, the castle was owned by the Lords of Haren, and from 1805, the Counts of Galen lived here.

After the end of the Second World War, refugees were housed here. In 1948, Count von Korff, also known as Schmiesing-Kerssenbrock, became the owner.

The moated castle was used as a youth hostel until the mid-1950s.

Since 1964, the property has been privately owned again by the von Kerssenbrock family.

A direct path leads from Hopen to Dinklage Castle. The path winds through the forest along tree-lined avenues laid out by Herbort Daniel von Haren many hundreds of years ago.
