Please note: if you are planning a walk in Sint-Maartensdijk with the Pluimpot nature reserve and a stretch of dike, it is best to take the path next to the water to/from the center of Sint-Maartensdijk if you do not want to walk through neighborhoods too much and prefer nature. Sometimes it is better to stand on the bridge for a while, rather than crossing it completely, depending on your walking plans.

Tholen used to be a series of separate islands with small and large channels in between. The Pluimpot was one of the largest gullies. In 1957, the Pluimpot was completely closed off into a dammed estuary. It is now a high-tide refuge and an important breeding area for coastal birds such as oystercatchers, common terns and avocets. De Pluimpot is a relatively small nature reserve with a very large history. The Pluimpot is the last trace of the channel that cut the island of Tholen in two until 1556.
