    In 1892, a devastating fire destroyed large parts of the Sander Tannen forest, a ridge of trees directly above the Geest slopes. However, this disaster also presented a new opportunity, as a separate church and cemetery could now be built on the vacated land. Planning began that same year, and just five years later, on January 10, 1897, a municipal burial ground was inaugurated "Auf dem Sande." The former cemetery has long since ceased to be a place of mourning, but rather an oasis of peace for the people of Lohbrügge.

    The burial ground has been vacant since 1972. For its 100th anniversary in 1997, it was finally converted into a public park, making it accessible to the general public. Several gravestones of historical significance were deliberately preserved and regrouped to form a so-called Gravestone Path. The valuable tree population and the traditional avenue layout were preserved. The mature shrubs create an exciting interplay of light and shadow, creating a pleasant atmosphere. One almost forgets that one is standing in a former cemetery.

    The park's character was only enhanced by a few minor interventions. For example, an artificial waterway was created through the grounds, leading to two water features. A sculpture entwined with climbing plants was also installed. Numerous benches invite you to linger and forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
