Located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, the Canton of Vaud is a destination of choice for experienced gravel enthusiasts. Vaud’s trail network extends from the shores of Lake Léman to the Alps, exploring vineyards, beautiful countryside and Jura’s uplands. The canton’s diverse landscapes make it an ideal playground for those who like a challenge.

In this Collection, Vaud native Alain Rumpf introduces you to the four best gravel loops in the region. An athlete, cycling guide and photographer, he has spent his entire life exploring Vaud and has mapped out these perfect routes with other local experts. There’s no finer way to discover the canton’s rich history and vibrant culture.

He rode the first three routes at the beginning of spring, a season perfect for gravel riding in Vaud. The fourth, set in the Alpes Vaudoises where snow lingers on high trails into the spring, is usually doable from May onwards.

The Collection is aimed at all levels of gravel enthusiast. Some loops can be shortened as required and don’t forget to sample the delicious local specialties along the way. Discover more details in the route descriptions below.

I live in the Vaudois Alps, a region I love exploring by gravel bike starting in May, once the snow has melted from the peaks. One of my favorite loops starts from Villars-sur-Ollon, very close to my home: it climbs the Col de la Croix. Well-known to road cyclists, it can also be climbed via some splendid
