Once upon a time … the Swabian Alb is the stuff that fairytales are made of. You can be right amongst its romantic landscapes, exploring one of Germany’s most castle-rich regions. Here, the imperial dynasties of the Staufer and Hohenzollern once resided; you can admire the region’s historic sites from the Albtrauf escarpment.
Castles and palaces play the leading role during the seven hikes in this Collection. Set out on a journey through time in the Obere Donau Nature Park and hike through the ‘Swabian Grand Canyon’. More wild, natural beauty is provided by the picturesque Laucherttal, while at the idyllic Großen Lautertal you can walk in the footsteps of the former rulers. Explore the Burg Reußenstein, which is said to have been built by a giant, and marvel at the medieval Hohenurach, a ruined fortress where many historic figures were imprisoned. Of course, the gothic grandeur of Lichtenstein Castle and the royal Hohenzollern Castle shouldn’t be missed. Every Tour is full of interest and magnificent views.
The two shortest routes are approximately 6 kilometres (4 mi) long, with around 120 and 190 metres (390 and 620 ft) of elevation gain respectively. The other Tours are slightly longer, between 8 and 14 kilometres (5 and 9 mi). The DonauWelle Eichfelsen-Panorama Tour is the most demanding, with 540 metres (1,770 ft) of elevation gain to overcome. The trails are mostly easy underfoot, though surefootedness is required at times.
