Photograph the perfect Matterhorn reflection in the famous Riffelsee, watch ibexes, and hike through old stone pine forests while the Gornergrat Bahn takes you comfortably up the mountain and back down to Zermatt.

The Gornergrat is the perfect hiking mountain for all abilities. Thanks to the Gornergrat Bahn, you can get up to over 3,100 metres (10,200 ft) quickly and effortlessly. At the same time, you can get on and off the train flexibly at all four stations along the way. This gives you countless hiking options, from short walks to long and strenuous mountain Tours.

We've put together eleven hikes for you to discover the Gornergrat with all its highlights. On the Tours, you'll explore the different vegetation zones, from barren rocky landscapes to flowering alpine meadows where black-nosed sheep graze and old stone pine forests – of course, always with magnificent views of the Matterhorn.

Experienced hikers head from the Gornergrat station towards the Gorner Glacier and marvel at the ice giant up close, before heading over the Riffelsee to the Riffelberg station. If you want to explore less frequented paths, then the Path of Silence from Gornergrat down to Riffelberg Station is for you. The Riffelsee Trail leads you from the Rotenboden station first to the well-known Riffelsee and then to the quieter Kleiner Riffelsee. You then descend over flowering alpine meadows to the Riffelberg station.

On the ‘In the Face of the Matterhorn’ Tour, you hike almost 6 kilometres (4 mi) from Rotenboden station to Riffelalp station and enjoy the magnificent panorama. The wonderful 4-Lake Hike from Sunnegga to Riffelalp Station is even longer. There’s a very special Tour for families: the adventure hike ‘Wolli and the Climate Detectives’. Together, you discover the highlights on the Gornergrat and solve the mystery of the missing glacier fleas.

By the way, you can already conveniently buy tickets for the Gornergrat Bahn online and save yourself waiting time at the ticket counter. So off you go! Discover the Gornergrat by train and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.
