Sunlight illuminates colourful leaves and is reflected in the shimmering waters of a lake, slowly revealed beneath the lifting fog – there is no season quite like autumn. You don’t have to travel far to enjoy the colourful tale end of the hiking season. In the picturesque Moselle Valley in south-western Germany, you can experience your own ‘Indian Summer’ without having to board a plane.
In autumn, the gentle vineyards along the Moselle transform into a sea of yellow and orange. When the grapes are harvested and the young wines are maturing in their barrels, it’s the perfect time for hiking in the Bernkastel-Kues region. You can look forward to stunning views, beautiful resting places and rustling leaves.
In this Collection, we’ve put together ten walks for you. You’ll definitely put your camera to good use capturing the splendid autumn colours. Most of the Tours follow easy paths through vineyards and forests, making them perfect for a family outing. All of the hikes are circulars except the Tour from Bernkastel-Kues to Traben-Trarbach, where you can catch a bus back to the starting point.
The area along the Moselle River and its side valleys is a sun-drenched heaven on earth. Here, you walk through quiet forests, well-known vineyards and along rushing streams enjoying the late autumn sun. The traditional villages and small towns en route offer cosy wine taverns, historic alleys and lots of flair so you can look forward to a varied mix of nature and culture. Hiking in the Moselle extends your hiking season, with local wines, stunning colours, and impressive history included!
