    The Ellinger Tor is the most famous medieval city gate of the city fortification of Weissenburg in Bavaria. The Ellinger Tor forms the northernmost part of Weißenburg's old town.

      The Ellinger Tor is one of the most beautiful city gates in southern Germany. The city gate in the north of the old town of Weissenburg was originally part of the city wall that was built around 1200. The gate tower was built in the 14th century, its upper floor in the 17th century. Around 1520 the barbican and the rampart were completed. A piece of the city's history can be seen at Ellinger Tor: on the right half is the first coat of arms (1241), on the left opposite the second coat of arms from Weissenburg dating from 1481. weissenburg.de/sehenswerte/ellinger_tor-3066

        The five-storey main tower dates from the 14th century[3] and was extended around 1510 to include the outbuilding and two smaller towers with curved domes. The top storey was added in 1662 when the damage from the Thirty Years' War was repaired.

        The tower complex is decorated with three coats of arms: the first imperial city coat of arms from 1241 can be seen on the right tower, the left one shows the city coat of arms from 1481, which is still valid today, and the imperial coat of arms is visible in the middle. Until sixty years ago the city moat was filled in, but now it is crossed by a stone bridge as it once was.

        The tower has housed the historical council library of the city of Weißenburg since 1977.[4] The five-storey building is crowned by a dome.[1]

        The Ellinger Gate adorned the 80-pfennig stamps of the German Federal Post's series German Buildings from Twelve Centuries in 1964 and 1967.
