    Martin Luther, Weißenburg
The Martin Luther Memorial. On October 31st, we celebrate Reformation Day in Germany. In 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the Castle Church in Wittenberg on this day. A few years later, as is known from some articles, on November 15th, 1530, Weißenburg voted in favor of the Reformation by 450 votes to 8. Today, Martin Luther Square, named after him, next to St. Andrew's Church, and the monument standing there commemorate this.

Monument at Martin Luther Square, Weißenburg
Today, the monument is an integral part of Martin Luther Square, but it hasn't always been here. Thirty years of dispute and discussion passed before the statue was finally placed in its final location. The sculptor wanted to place his statue where it stands today, but at that time, cars were still parked in front of the church. Therefore, the administration refused to approve this location. The donor then suggested placing it on a meadow near the west portal of the church. There, the Luther statue would be placed on a pedestal with a reference to the donor. However, the sculptor opposed this pedestal, arguing that "his" Luther shouldn't be placed on anything. The reformer saw himself as a man of the people who didn't want to be enthroned above the people. The sculptor even almost wanted to take the monument back because the donor and artist disagreed. Fortunately, both parties were able to agree on the sidewalk next to the west portal, and the pedestal was also omitted. Until 2013, Luther stood on this sidewalk. However, since the people of Weißenburg were dissatisfied with this location, the monument was moved to its original location, where it belongs, after Martin Luther Square was made car-free.

Incidentally, it is not at all certain whether Martin Luther ever actually visited Weißenburg, as there are no sources to support this. However, it is very likely that the reformer traveled through Weißenburg on his trip to Rome in 1510/11. Even if Luther may not have been to Weißenburg personally, he still had a profound influence on the city's history.
