The town hall of Zella-Mehlis was built between the two old town centers between 1924 and 1925 during the term of office of the mayor Hans Gerhard under the supervision of the town councilor Karl Wilharm.
The architect of the building was Reinhard Claaßen (1886-1960), who had made a name for himself with ducal administrative buildings in Coburg since the 1920s and won the local tender.
The factual, reduced historicism architecture of the Zella-Mehlis town hall was intended to underline its function as an administrative building and symbol of the cities of Mehlis and Zella St. Blasii, which were united on April 1, 1919.
It is the main building of an architectural ensemble with residential and commercial buildings as the administrative center and town center.
The new building was inaugurated with a big celebration on August 22nd, 1925.
