The donkey path was created as access to the mills in the Mußbach valley, because the Deidesheimers of the Prince-Bishopric of Speyer could only reach their mills with carts if they took the route through the Gimmeldinger valley via Electorate of the Palatinate territory. When an Electorate of the Palatinate customs barrier was erected in Gimmeldingen in 1715, the Deidesheimers kept donkeys in their mills to transport grain, flour and other things through their own forest over the 450 m high Knoppenweth.
