Tiefencastel is located in the Albula Valley at the intersection of important Graubünden traffic axes and on the Albula railway line. The location makes Tiefencastel the starting point for many excursions, such as to Parc Ela, whose valley-side gate forms Tiefencastel.
The historical significance of Tiefencastel (851 m) is derived from its geographical location: at the confluence of the Albula and Julia, the north-south traffic axes from Chur to the Julier and Septimer passes and west-east from the Schyn Gorge to the Albula and beyond intersect here Davos to the Flüela Pass in the Lower Engadine and towards Tyrol. A road also connects Tiefencastel with Lenzerheide.

The area around Tiefencastel offers numerous attractive hiking opportunities, for example to Val Tuors or Oberhalbstein. Above Salouf, not far from Tiefencastel, is the Ziteil pilgrimage church. At an altitude of 2433 m, Ziteil is the highest pilgrimage site in Europe. In winter, the ski resorts of Lenzerheide, Savognin and Davos are easily accessible.
