During the development of HafenCity, great importance was attached to the quality of the open space design. The architectural firm EBMT Arquitectes Associates from Barcelona won the competition for the design of the open spaces. This resulted, among other things, in the Magellan Terraces.

The Magellan Terraces are built in steps on several levels towards the water, from them you have an impressive view of the Elbphilharmonie, the Elbe and the traditional ship harbor in the Sandtorhafen. This houses historic ships, sailors and cranes, another special sight on the square. The traditional ship harbor is designed in a special way: it consists of floating pontoon systems that rise and fall with the tide and thus have direct access to the water at all times. The harbor is connected to the Magellan Terraces by restored historic jetties.

The design of the surfaces of the Magellan Terraces picks up on the historical and maritime background of the place. So-called "carpet elements", colored floor ornaments, refer to the traditional carpet trade in the adjacent warehouse district. The cladding of walls and walls consists of plastic bricks forming abstract fish ornaments.

The lighting concept of the square is also impressive: a curved steel light element, up to 10 m high, forms a superstructure over the square and provides effective lighting at night.

The Magellan Terraces are one of many open spaces in HafenCity that invite you to relax with impressive architecture and an irresistible charm between tradition and modernity.
There are only a few places in Hamburg where you can sit down so close to the Elbe, linger on the wide steps and let the maritime atmosphere work its magic on you.
Along with the Marco Polo Terraces and the Lohsepark, the Magellan Terraces are the most popular open space and meeting place for Hamburg residents in HafenCity.

Sure, the location has its price. But I think you can treat yourself to it.

If you just "chill" on the steps of the Magellan Terraces beforehand, it's also great with the view over the Sandtorkai with the ships and the Elbphi behind.
From here and a little closer to Sandtorkai you can particularly clearly see the "waves" that the roof of the Elbphi is modeled on. If you stand too close to the Elbphi, you can no longer see it so well.

A wonderful place in the Hafencity. The terraces are designed in such a way that you can walk from them to the Sandtorhafen traditional ship harbor via a long wooden walkway. On this walkway there is a restaurant and a kiosk where you can buy food and drinks. A museum has also been set up here, in the truest sense of the word.

Ferdinand Magellan – Portuguese explorer and circumnavigator around 1500 – is making his permanent home in HafenCity: On June 11, 2005, the approximately 5,000 m² terraced plaza in HafenCity was inaugurated.
Designed and realized by landscape architect Benedetta Tagliabue, the plaza consists of white and polished concrete for intricate staircases and ramps. Granite was laid between them, and the quay walls are decorated with mosaics depicting fish. On three levels, ultramodern steel lighting elements, winding in all directions, alternate with young magnolias, white willows, swamp oaks, and flowering ash trees, gently swaying in the breeze. With the inauguration and renaming of the former area at the head of Sandtorhafen to Magellan Terraces, the city gained its first spectacular and still unique view of the Elbe River – whether at high or low tide.
The complex was further expanded with a pontoon providing access to the museum harbor, which can be reached via a historic jetty from the quay wall.
