The Krayenburg can be traced back to the year 1155 and was owned by the Lords of Frankenstein. It was plundered, destroyed and then abandoned during the Thirty Years' War. Since then, all that remains of the castle itself are the ruins of the palace and the cellar vaults. The more modern building next door was once a hotel, but is now empty. However, the castle association takes care of catering for hikers on at least most Sundays.

Most of the climbs to the Krayenburg are quite steep and poorly signposted. The easiest climb is along the road from the east side.

The Krayenburg Castle is one of the oldest stone castles in the Werra Valley, presumably built on the site of a pagan mountain sanctuary. It was first documented in 1155 as a "castrum" of the Bad Hersfeld Monastery.

The noble family of Frankenstein held the castle as a fief and expanded it into one of the most important Romanesque castles in the Werra Valley.

Around 1920, the Krayenburg Community Association built a hermitage, a sandstone building with a hall and accommodations, as well as an observation tower.

The castle is open for business on Sundays and also offers numerous covered outdoor seating areas.
