Kalkum Castle is Düsseldorf's only moated castle and an outstanding example of neoclassical palace architecture in the Rhineland. The picturesque setting serves as a venue for classical concerts.

In the mid-19th century, the castle gained notoriety due to a protracted divorce dispute between its then owner. The approximately 19-hectare castle park, designed by landscape architect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe as an English landscape garden, is now a publicly accessible recreational area.

One preserved relic is the former garden pavilion, which now houses a memorial to the politician Ferdinand Lassalle.

The Kalkum Castle monument is a place steeped in history, with a history going back more than 1000 years. It ranges from the royal court in the 9th century to a medieval knight's seat and a baroque castle of the Counts of Winkelhausen to the glamorous country residence of the Counts and Princes of Hatzfeld in the 19th century. A Countess von Hatzfeld was a great sponsor of Ferdinand Lassalle, for whom she built a mausoleum in the castle park that still exists today after his death.

Kalkum Castle. Today the state archive. This manor house was built in the 18th century by the Counts (later Princes) of Hatzfeld, replacing previous Gothic structures, as a fort-like three-winged structure with four rectangular flanking towers.

Remodeled in the Neoclassical style between 1810 and 1820.

The core of the outer bailey dates back to the 16th/17th century.

A landscaped park was laid out around 1825 by Maximiliaan von Weyhe.
