The pilgrimage church of Maria Zell bei Hechingen (district Boll) in the Zollernalbkreis is located directly on the steep slope of the Swabian Alb below the Zeller Horn with a view of Hohenzollern Castle and goes back to the settlement of Zell, which was abandoned in the 15th century. This settlement probably evolved from a monk cell of the monastery of St. Gallen. In 789 this monastery had been given a farm estate "on the slope" of a high mountain near Hechingen.
