The Zeiss Planetarium was opened in 1987 to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Berlin. GDR general building director Erhardt Gißke, who also designed the prefabricated buildings in the nearby First Thälmann Park, was responsible for the construction. With its massive dome and detailed concrete facade, the planetarium appropriately looks like a landed UFO.

After several years of renovation, the planetarium was reopened in 2016 and today presents itself as the most modern science theater in Europe. You can find out more at planetarium.berlin.

Just a stone's throw away from the Prenzlauer Allee S-Bahn station, the starry sky can be viewed from the comfort of your armchair in the Zeiss Planetarium without any disturbing clouds. The largest planetarium in Central Europe opened as a prestige project in 1987 for the 750th anniversary in East Berlin. This makes it one of the last representative buildings in the former GDR. The head of state at the time, Erich Honecker, had Erhardt Gißke, the responsible construction director, personally report to him regularly on the progress of construction.
The Zeiss large planetarium has 307 seats in the large planetarium hall and also a cinema hall with 160 seats. The modern science theater is dedicated to subjects such as astronomy, biology, chemistry and medicine. A general overview of the wonders of the universe is just as much part of the program as complex topics, such as the mysteries of life. Special children's and family programs are aimed at the thirst for knowledge in an age-appropriate way.

"When it opened in 1987, the Zeiss Großplanetarium was already one of the largest and most advanced of its kind in Europe. With the renovation in 2016, it is now the most modern on the continent. The flair of the former GDR prestige building has been preserved: the facade and the marble floor shine in their old glory. The planetarium sees itself as a science theater that is dedicated to areas such as biology and chemistry in addition to astronomy. The content is prepared in an age-appropriate manner, so that many offers are aimed specifically at young people thirsting for knowledge. The 360° full dome lets you literally fly through the cosmos, while the sound system offers an impressive spatial sound experience. The planetarium hall can accommodate over 300 guests. The location near the Prenzlauer Allee S-Bahn station ensures easy accessibility. ..." [Source: berlin-welcomecard.de/de/partner/zeiss-grossplanetarium]
