    The tall, three-legged navigational signs no longer have any actual function, but are considered, together with the rescue stations, to be an essential cultural, historical and architectural element in the coastal landscape of West Jutland.

    Navigational signs are intended to improve safety at sea. They are not binding and it is up to the individual sailor to judge their relevance. For example, a mark for an area of low tide may be of great importance for a cargo ship, but for a dinghy it is of no importance.

    Some of the navigational signs are provided with light signals and reflections, and based on the shape, color and tip - as well as the placement of the navigational sign in relation to the lighthouses, you can see where you are and what to look out for.

    Navigational signs are also called beacons or lighthouses, which in the Middle Ages was the name for a pile of wood with fire in it - and served as a signal light on a higher place.

    Navigational signs have existed for a long time, but have only been systematically erected since around 1844. At that time, it was decided where and how the Danish shipping lanes should be marked.

    11 tall navigation marks, almost sculptural, three-legged wooden structures, were erected around 1885. All 11, including those in Verdersø Klit, Årgab and Haurvig, are now protected.

    The three-legged navigation marks no longer have any legal status as navigation marks, but are nevertheless preserved as a culturally historical and architecturally important element in the landscape.
