Start from Zermatt and follow Edelweissweg counter clockwise. The ascent is ling but interesting. After the ascent you have Matterhorn in front of you for the next 10km. Keep in mind there is no hut between hotel Du Trift and Zmutt.

Take the train to Gornergrat and then hike back down to Zermatt. If you can, plan this for later afternoon because of the views. You can go all the way down to Zermatt but the views after Riffelalp are no longer as rewarding.
