The restaurant Wotschofska is both the hallmark of the Spreewald Marathon (paddling) and the starting point for the Spreewald Badge.

In the middle of the high forest is the "Alder Island" (derived from the Sorbian "wotsow"). Wotschofska can only be reached on foot or by boat. One of the oldest traditional inns, the "Wotschofska", which was built in 1894, is located on the island. On the way there you have to cross 14 bridges - ok on foot - it can be exhausting by bike.

When will Wotschofska Inn and its surrounding trails reopen after the bridge construction?

Please note that due to bridge construction, the Wotschofska Inn and the main hiking trail leading to it are scheduled to reopen on April 1, 2026. Visitors should plan their trips accordingly.

Is Wotschofska Inn dog-friendly, and are there dog-friendly trails nearby?

While the inn itself welcomes dogs in its outdoor areas, it's always a good idea to check with the staff upon arrival. The Spreewald region, including trails leading to Wotschofska Inn, is generally very dog-friendly. Many hiking and cycling routes allow leashed dogs, and some punt and canoe rentals also accommodate furry companions, making it a great destination for dog owners.

Where can I park my car before heading to Wotschofska Inn, since it's car-free?

As Wotschofska Inn is completely car-free, you'll need to park in nearby villages like Lehde or Lübbenau. From there, you can continue your journey by foot, bicycle, punt, or canoe. Parking lots are available in these towns, often near the main harbors or starting points for Spreewald excursions.

Are there specific amenities or activities for families with children at Wotschofska Inn?

Yes, Wotschofska Inn is considered family-friendly. It features a small playground for children, offering a nice break for younger visitors. The car-free environment also makes it a safe and enjoyable place for families to explore by foot or bike, and the journey by punt is often a highlight for kids.

Are there easy hiking or cycling routes to Wotschofska Inn suitable for beginners or families?

The terrain around Wotschofska Inn and in the Spreewald is generally flat, making many routes suitable for beginners and families. While some paths, like the Wotschofskaweg, involve crossing numerous small bridges, they are typically manageable. Look for routes starting from Lehde or Lübbenau that are designated as easy or family-friendly for a pleasant experience.

Is the Wotschofskaweg or other routes to the inn suitable for strollers?

The Wotschofskaweg involves crossing 14 bridges, which can be challenging with a stroller. While the overall terrain is flat, the frequent bridge crossings might require lifting the stroller. For easier stroller access, consider wider paths or alternative routes, or plan to use a baby carrier for very young children.

Are there accommodation options close to Wotschofska Inn or in nearby Lehde/Lübbenau?

Wotschofska Inn itself does not offer accommodation. However, the nearby villages of Lehde and Lübbenau/Spreewald provide a wide range of accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses, and holiday apartments. These towns serve as excellent bases for exploring the Spreewald and visiting the inn.

Do I need any permits for hiking, cycling, or boating in the Spreewald area around Wotschofska Inn?

Generally, no specific permits are required for hiking or cycling on designated trails in the Spreewald. For boating, if you bring your own canoe or kayak, you might need to register or pay a small fee at certain entry points, especially for larger waterways. If you rent a punt or canoe from a local provider, any necessary permits are usually included or handled by the rental company.

How can I reach Lehde or Lübbenau by public transport to start my journey to Wotschofska Inn?

Both Lehde and Lübbenau/Spreewald are accessible by public transport. Lübbenau/Spreewald has a train station with connections to major cities like Berlin and Cottbus. From Lübbenau, you can reach Lehde by local bus, taxi, or a pleasant walk/cycle. Once in Lehde or Lübbenau, you can begin your car-free journey to Wotschofska Inn.

Are there any hidden gem walks or less crowded routes to Wotschofska Inn?

While the main routes to Wotschofska Inn are popular, exploring some of the smaller, less-trafficked paths through the dense high forest can offer a more secluded experience. Consider starting your journey from slightly further afield in Lübbenau and taking a less direct, winding route through the waterways or forest paths. Early mornings or weekdays outside of peak season can also provide a quieter visit.

What kind of regional cuisine can I expect at Wotschofska Inn?

Wotschofska Inn is known for its hearty regional cuisine, often featuring traditional Sorbian dishes. You can expect local specialties, fresh fish from the Spreewald, and classic German fare, all served in a rustic and authentic atmosphere. Don't forget to try the local beer!
