The Frauenburg Castle was built in the 13th century to secure the Nahe crossing and the possessions of the Count of Sponheim. The complex later served as a widow's residence for Countess Loretta of Sponheim, and the Dream Loop hike is dedicated to her. The ruins were extensively restored between 2013 and 2015 and are now in excellent condition. A must-see!

The Countess of Trier - 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝘃𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 - 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴

An extraordinary woman of the 14th century. At the age of 27, the young widow took over the rule of the county in 1323 and ruled it with a strong hand for her three children until 1331. She made history through her daring capture of the most powerful imperial prince, Baldwin of Trier, in 1328. This shocked all of Europe, led to her being outlawed by the Emperor and excommunicated by the Pope, but she nevertheless asserted her claims, forcing Baldwin to sign a reconciliation treaty. After handing over the rule to her son, she renounced Herrstein as her widow's residence and chose Frauenburg instead, where she also spent her final years. In early 1346, the countess, not yet 50 years old, died and was buried next to her husband in Himmerod Abbey. Source: Text information panel

        Fortress of the Countess

Built before 1327 as a fortress for the southwestern parts of the County of Sponheim-Starkenburg and the Nahe River crossing. Only the inner castle area survives. It was chosen in 1331 by Loretta von Sponheim as a widow's residence instead of the contractually secured Herrstein Castle. After the countess's death, the castle became the official residence of the bailiffs of the Frauenberg domain, which also encompassed the towns of Reichenbach, Hammerstein, Ausweiler, Kronweiler, and the lordly estates of Winnenberg and Homerich. The castle was rarely used. During the Thirty Years' War, the uninhabited castle fell into disrepair. It is possible that the 30 x 10 m remains still standing today were built on a Roman site (burgus). The small tower is said to be the place where Rapunzel lived. Source: Text information board

The dream loop is named after a defensive lady of the Middle Ages who lived at Burg Frauenburg.
The ruin is very well preserved and, apart from the tower, freely accessible.

The Frauenburg is the ruin of a medieval spur castle south of Sonnenberg-Winnenberg and Frauenberg in the Birkenfeld district of Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle stands on a narrow mountain spur not far from the Nahe River. The spur is formed by the Aubach and Ellenbach streams.
The Frauenburg was built before 1327 by the Counts of Sponheim and belonged to the Hinterer Grafschaft (Upper County). From 1331 onward, it served as the widow's residence for Countess Loretta of Sponheim after she handed over the reins of government to her son, Johann III. The Frauenburg later became the official residence of a Sponheim bailiff. The castle was destroyed by Lorraine troops in 1673 during the so-called Wildfangfehde (Wildfang Feud).

                    Great castle ruins

The namesake of the castle and the village of Frauenberg is one of the most colorful female figures of the Middle Ages and proof that women have always played a decisive role in shaping our country's history. Loretta came from the Salm family of counts, wealthy in the Vosges Mountains near Strasbourg, which also maintains dynastic connections in the Luxembourg and Hunsrück regions to this day. In early 1315, not yet 20 years old, she married the much older Count Henry II of Sponheim Starkenburg. Henry died in 1323, and Loretta moved with her three sons to Starkenburg Castle near Trarbach. Loretta was now responsible for managing the county's affairs as guardian of her son, John III, who was probably only eight years old. This castle protruded like a thorn into the Electorate of Trier and threatened to endanger the possessions along the Moselle and around Koblenz.

Archbishop Baldwin ruled in Trier. As an elector and brother of an emperor, he was one of the most powerful men in the empire and now considered the time had come to expand his holdings by occupying Sponheim's estates against a supposedly weak woman.

The Frauenburg, with its two mighty round towers, is hidden in a narrow side valley of the Nahe River. A regular rectangular structure (29 x 9 m) with four round corner towers and a round tower in the middle of the north side. The well-preserved eastern section is impressive; two round towers of varying thickness and height, with slit windows, connected by a short shield wall.

The castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century by the Counts of Sponheim/Starkenburg. Because of Birkenfeld, they became embroiled in a dispute with Archbishop Baldwin of Trier, who was striving to expand the Electorate. When Baldwin was captured by Countess Loretta of Sponheim's people near Starkenburg near Trarbach during a truce in 1328, he bought his freedom through a reconciliation agreement; in it, he finally surrendered Birkenfeld and paid a ransom from Countess Loretta of Starkenburg. Sponheim bought the pawned Frauenburg from her sister-in-law, Blandeflor von Sponheim. Loretta von Sponheim then chose Frauenburg as her widow's residence.

The ruins of the Frauenburg Castle stand perched on a narrow mountain spur above the Nahe River and tell the eventful story of Countess Loretta von Sponheim. Built in the early 14th century, it served as the countess's widow's residence and the strategic center of her reign. Today, the well-preserved ruins offer a fascinating insight into medieval architecture and breathtaking views of the Nahe Valley.

💡 Tip: Take your time to read the information panels and absorb the atmosphere of the castle – a place that brings history to life.
