The Shakers were a free church community whose members, despite their family structures, committed themselves to a strictly celibate life entirely dedicated to manual work. The community in Pleasant Hill was founded in 1805 and lasted for over 100 years, flourishing particularly in the mid-19th century. The settlement has been preserved like no other and preserves the image of this era as a well-maintained museum village, nestled in the rolling hills, between endless dry-stone walls and white wooden fences stretching far across the hills.
