In the 13th century, in Via D'Azeglio, there was the church of S. Giovanni Battista, owned by the Order of Malta, which in 1574 sold it to the Minimi religious, called Paolotti from their founder San Francesco di Paola. In 1625, the Minimi decided to build a new church and a new convent, the works of which were completed in 1632, with the exception of the facade of the church, which was dedicated to S. Francesco di Paola and S. Giovanni Battista.

The Baroque facade with the characteristic two towers (of the Paolotti) was completed in 1689 based on a design by the Piacenza architect Carlo Virginio Draghi and thanks to the generosity of Count Stefano Sanvitale. The church had a single nave with three side chapels with a background and contained paintings of good value.

In 1818, by decree of Maria Luigia, the convent was used as the Hospital de' Pazzarelli, while the neglected church fell into ruin and was demolished, with the exception of the artistic façade. In 1872, when the asylum was moved to the ducal residence of Colorno, the complex was used as a children's hospital. In the meantime, the façade had deteriorated again and would have been demolished if it had not been saved by a lively press campaign, so in 1902 a new restoration was carried out. In 1936, the ancient convent passed to the University, which placed the scientific and later humanistic faculties there, while the Paolotti towers were the subject of new renovation work in 1961. In October 2011, the restoration and redevelopment of the entire complex of the former convent of San Francesco di Paola and the former Church known as the Paolotti was inaugurated to house the new headquarters of the Literature library, with 128 thousand books. The library was inaugurated on July 2, 2014.
