Sprengepielplatz runs northwest of Große Straße from Gildestraße to Kolpingstraße. A few steps from the beginning of the square, at the junction of Gildestraße and Kronenstraße, a bronze statue by the sculptor Bernard Kleinhaus was erected in 1981. It depicts a large dog with bared teeth and a broken chain.
The background to the statue is the Vechta legend surrounding Colonel Sprengepiel, who is said to have made a pact with the devil so that his soldiers could transform into shrubs and bushes. After the victorious colonel died, the devil demanded his share of the pact, whereupon Sprengepiel was cursed to a life as a wild dog.
This dog is said to haunt the streets and the moor to this day. Another version of the story refers to the historically documented Imperial Captain Sprengepiel, who was stationed in Vechta with a cavalry unit around 1640 and, for a time, also owned the Falkenrott estate. This cavalry unit committed looting and earned a reputation as a good fighting unit. The sudden appearance and disappearance of the cavalry unit during their raids was explained by a pact with the devil. Based on this, another legend stated that the cursed dog was banished to their monastery by the Franciscan monks and released during the dissolution of the monastery under French occupation around 1810. Since then, the dog is said to have haunted Vechta. Many legends have been created by the people of Vechta around these historical facts and stories, mixing truth and fantasy.
