The Hohengerhausen ruin, also known as Rusenschloss, is enthroned in the forest high above Blaubeuren and is likely to date back to the eleventh century. It gives you a wonderful view of the Ach and Blautal. Unfortunately, her old age increases, which is why the castle is currently largely closed and under renovation. The view and the grotto just a few meters below are definitely worth the climb.

The upper area of the ruin (residential tower with a good view) is currently closed (July 9, 2016) due to the risk of rock falls. At the ruin there is no information about renovation measures or any duration of the closure.

    Edit (12/2016):
Coincidentally found a current newspaper article about it. The renovation will start in 2017 and will continue until 2019. For reasons of nature conservation, work is only carried out from August to December. The whole thing will cost 3.2 million.

What is the official name of the castle ruins, and are there any alternative names?

The site is officially known as the Rusenschloss Ruins, but it is also frequently referred to as Hohengerhausen Castle. Historically, it has been known by both names, reflecting its location near Gerhausen and its prominent position.

Are there any easier hiking routes to the Rusenschloss Ruins for families or those seeking a less strenuous climb?

While the most direct paths from Blaubeuren or Gerhausen involve a steep ascent, there are alternative, slightly less strenuous routes that can be found. These often involve a longer, more gradual incline or starting from a higher elevation point. Exploring komoot's route planner can help you discover options tailored to different fitness levels, including circular walks that might offer a gentler approach.

Is there parking available near the Rusenschloss Ruins, and is it free?

Parking is generally available in Blaubeuren or Gerhausen, from where the hiking trails to the ruins begin. Specific parking details, including whether it's free or paid, can vary. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival, especially in peak season, as spaces can fill up quickly.

How can I reach the Rusenschloss Ruins using public transport?

The Rusenschloss Ruins are accessible via public transport by first reaching Blaubeuren. Blaubeuren has a train station (Blaubeuren Bahnhof) and bus connections. From the town center, you can then begin your hike to the ruins. For detailed schedules and connections, it's best to consult local public transport websites for routes to Blaubeuren, Sonderbuch, or Gerhausen.

Are dogs allowed on the trails and within the Rusenschloss Ruins site?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the hiking trails leading to and around the Rusenschloss Ruins. However, they should be kept on a leash, especially due to the steep terrain, potential wildlife, and for the comfort of other visitors. Please ensure you clean up after your pet.

What is the current renovation status of the Rusenschloss Ruins, and is everything accessible in 2024/2025?

The Rusenschloss Ruins underwent extensive renovations between 2017 and 2021 and were officially reopened in October 2020. The site is now largely accessible and well-maintained. While major closures are not anticipated for 2024/2025, it's always a good idea to check local advisories for any temporary closures due to maintenance or weather conditions, especially concerning specific sections like the residential tower.

Is it possible to visit the Rusenschloss Ruins during winter, and what should I consider?

Visiting the Rusenschloss Ruins in winter is possible and can offer a unique, serene experience. However, hikers should be prepared for potentially icy and snowy conditions on the steep paths. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options directly near the Rusenschloss Ruins?

What are some 'hidden gems' or lesser-known natural features near the Rusenschloss Ruins, beyond the Große Grotte?

While the Große Grotte is a significant natural and historical feature, the surrounding Swabian Jura is rich in other geological formations and viewpoints. Exploring the wider network of hiking trails around Blaubeuren can lead to other smaller caves, rock formations, and secluded viewpoints that offer different perspectives of the Blautal valley and its unique karst landscape.

Hikers might spot various bird species, including birds of prey soaring above the valleys. Mammals such as deer, foxes, and badgers inhabit the forests, though they are often shy and more active during dawn or dusk. The area's unique geology also supports specific flora and insect life.

How family-friendly are the Rusenschloss Ruins, especially for younger children?

The Rusenschloss Ruins can be a rewarding destination for families, but the steep ascent requires a certain level of fitness and caution. For younger children, the climb might be challenging, and sturdy footwear is a must. The historical elements and the Große Grotte can be engaging for older children. Consider shorter routes or carrying very young children in appropriate carriers. The panoramic views are a great reward for the effort.
