Every year in Laos more people are injured due to Uxo, i.e. unexploded bombs - unexploded ordnance. At the Cope visitor centre you can learn a lot about the gruesome reality of war and how the victims are helped on a donation basis.
Another side of the colourful and beautiful country!

UXO (Unexploded Ordnance)
In 2012, the number of survivors of unexploded ordnance in Laos was estimated at 15,000. Many of them are amputees who require regular medical, rehabilitation, and social care throughout their lives. One-third of COPE's prosthetic limb patients are unexploded ordnance survivors.

TRAUMA INJURIES
The incidence of accident-related trauma is increasing in Laos, primarily due to the rising number of traffic accidents, especially among young people. Today, traffic accidents account for one-third of all COPE prosthetic limb patients.

OTHER
Other causes include diabetes, leprosy, osteomyelitis, bone tumors, and congenital limb defects. Complications from infections can also lead to sepsis or gangrene, requiring amputation.

One-third of COPE's prosthetic limb patients are UXO survivors.

At COPE's visitor center, the topic of cluster bombs and their impact on the population is clearly visible. Although Laos was not an official participant in the war, US troops in the Vietnam War dropped approximately 270 million cluster bombs on Laos. The effects are still visible today. COPE has received funding to address these impacts since the Obama administration. There are fears that these funds will be withdrawn under Trump. This would lead to restrictions for people with disabilities in Laos.
