Hanging Rock

Embark on an easy hike along the Hanging Rock Trail, a 1.7-mile (2.7 km) route that typically takes about 51 minutes to complete. You will ascend 367 feet (112 metres) in elevation, making your way through a dense canopy of chestnut and hemlock trees. The path culminates at the iconic quartzite formation known as Hanging Rock. From this prominent landmark, you are treated to panoramic views that stretch across the park below, encompassing the Sauratown and Pilot Mountains, and on clear days, even the distant Blue Ridge Mountains. It is a rewarding experience for its length and accessibility.

Planning your visit requires some foresight, as the trail is very popular and can become crowded, especially during peak fall foliage. Parking is generally available, but arriving early is highly recommended during busy times to secure a spot. Be prepared for varied terrain underfoot, which includes paved sections, gravel, dirt, and rocks, along with some uneven steps and stairs. This diversity adds to the hiking experience.

The Hanging Rock formation itself is a notable quartzite outcrop, offering some of the most expansive views in the region.
