Evangelical Martin Luther Church, Hainburg
The Protestant church consists of four main elements: the church space, the community hall, the sacristy and the sculptural bell tower. Coop Himmelb(l)au derived the shape of the building from a giant table, with the entire roof structure resting on four steel supports, the legs of the "table".
The roof with its distinctive three skylights is another key element.
The outer skin of the roof consists of 8 mm thick, three-dimensionally deformed steel plates that were welded onto a frame structure. The roof elements were designed and manufactured using shipbuilding technology. An important architectural role model was Le Corbusier, because of his references to shipbuilding, but also because of his monastery in La Tourette. This also symbolizes the Trinity of God.
The freely formed 20 meter high bell tower on the forecourt is a vertical, self-supporting steel structure. It complements the building ensemble as a landmark that can be seen from afar.
The play with light and transparency is of key importance in this project. The light comes from above: three large, spiral-shaped openings in the roof direct the light inside. The church space itself is not only a mystical space and place of peace, but also an open community space.
From the church space you enter the daylight-flooded, glass-covered children's area, which also contains the baptismal font. Behind it is the community hall; the two main rooms can be separated or connected using folding walls. On the other side, a glass folding facade opens onto the street.
An elongated block on a smaller side street flanks the two main rooms and contains the sacristy, the pastor's office, a small kitchen and other ancillary rooms. A handicapped-accessible ramp leads between the three parts of the building to the higher community garden.

The church has a street-facing, projecting and recessed glass facade, a striking roof structure that echoes the curves of the nearby Romanesque ossuary, and a twenty meter high, free-standing, twisting, slender bell tower with an opening for the bell and one above lying cross. The extraordinary 30-ton, shimmering silver roof construction was made by the shipbuilding company Ostseestaal. The bell in the bell tower, which is reminiscent of a tuning fork, comes from the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck, consists of 22 parts tin and 78 parts copper, weighs 130 kg and has a lower diameter of 60 cm.
