The Chimenea de la fundición de plomo "Los Guindos", also known as the Torre Mónica, is an industrial chimney. This chimney was part of the installations of the fundición de plomo de Los Guindos, which was built in 1923 on the Playa de San Andrés for the metallurgy of lead from the Los Guindos mine in La Carolina. The chimney is 106 metres high and its function was to transport the toxic gases from the factory to higher parts of the atmosphere. The factory was closed in 1979, but the chimney remains as a symbol of industry in Málaga.

What is the historical significance of Chimenea de Los Guindos?

The Chimenea de Los Guindos, also known as Torre Mónica, is a significant relic of Málaga's industrial past. It was built in 1923 as part of the Fundición de Plomo Los Guindos, a lead smelting plant that operated from 1924 to 1979. Its primary function was to disperse toxic gases from the smelting process high into the atmosphere. Today, it stands as a symbol of the region's 20th-century economic development and industrial heritage, being one of the few remaining structures from Málaga's second industrial wave.

Are there any specific walking routes or trails directly associated with the Chimenea de Los Guindos?

While there isn't a specific 'trail' to the chimney itself, it is prominently located on the Paseo Marítimo de Poniente. This extensive promenade offers paved walking and cycling paths stretching along the coast. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls, runs, or bike rides with the chimney as a striking landmark. Many choose to walk along the beachside path, which provides excellent views of the structure and the Mediterranean Sea.

What are the parking options for visitors to Chimenea de Los Guindos?

Parking facilities are available in the surrounding area, particularly along Calle Pacífico and adjacent streets. However, as it's a popular coastal area, parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak season or on weekends. It's advisable to arrive earlier in the day to secure a spot, or consider using public transport for a stress-free visit.

Is Chimenea de Los Guindos accessible by public transport?

Yes, the Chimenea de Los Guindos is well-connected by public transport. Several bus routes serve the coastal strip along Calle Pacífico, making it easy to reach from various parts of Málaga city. For photography, the 'golden hour' – shortly after sunrise or before sunset – offers the most dramatic lighting, casting a warm glow on the chimney and the surrounding coastline. The contrast of the industrial structure against the sea and sky is particularly striking during these times. Visiting in the early morning can also provide clearer views and fewer crowds.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options nearby?

What unique features can be observed at the base of the chimney?

At the base of the Chimenea de Los Guindos, you can observe its robust octagonal concrete foundation and the square chamfered pedestal. During its restoration between 2007 and 2008, a pendulum was installed inside the base to monitor its stability. This pendulum is visible through the four round arches at the base of the shaft, adding an unexpected artistic and engineering element to the monument.

Is Chimenea de Los Guindos suitable for a winter visit?

Absolutely. Málaga enjoys mild winters, making it an excellent time to visit Chimenea de Los Guindos.
