Schaffhausen is a city on the Upper Rhine. It is the capital of the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen and, with 38,666 inhabitants, also the largest municipality in the canton. In the local dialect, the place name is Schafuuse, Schaffuuse, Schafhuuse; in French, Schaffhouse, in Italian, Sciaffusa, and in Romansh, Schaffusa.

Schaffhausen is the northernmost city in Switzerland and, along with Basel, the town of Stein am Rhein, Neunkirch, and Eglisau in the canton of Zurich, one of the few Swiss cities north of the High Rhine along the border between Germany and Switzerland. The old town features numerous Renaissance buildings. Schaffhausen earned the nickname "Oriel City" (Bay Window City) due to its 300 bay windows. Outside the original city walls—now located in the center of the city due to expansion—is the Munot, a 16th-century fortress. Southwest of the city, but no longer within the city limits, is the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe. Of the 41.78 km² of the municipality, 19.9% is in building land, 29.1% is used for agriculture, and 51% is forested.

Since 1867, Schaffhausen has had its own municipal theater on Herrenacker, the largest city square. Named the Imthurneum after its founder, Johann Conrad Imthurn, the theater was transferred from the Imthurn Foundation to the city of Schaffhausen in 1938 and was demolished in 1954 due to major structural defects. The current building was opened in 1956. The Schaffhausen City Theater is operated as a guest theater by the city of Schaffhausen.[55] In addition to this, the city's largest theater, there are other theater venues, such as the Cardinal rehearsal stage,[56] the Fassbühne,[57] the Kammgarn event hall[58] and the Haberhauskeller.[59] In November 2021,

The municipal museum of All Saints is largely housed in the former Benedictine monastery of All Saints and features exhibitions on archaeology, history, art, and natural history. Among other things, a replica of the prehistoric cave dwelling Kesslerloch can be seen.
The Stemmler Museum in Sporrengasse displays taxidermied animals from Europe, particularly a collection of stuffed birds of prey such as eagles, golden eagles, and bearded vultures. The museum was established by the nature and animal conservationist Carl Stemmler (1882–1971). He wanted to draw attention to the persecution of these animals. In 1970, Stemmler donated the museum to the city of Schaffhausen.[63]

The museum in the Armory displays personal equipment, service weapons, wind instruments, historic military vehicles, and artillery of the Swiss Army in the 19th and 20th centuries.[64]
The International Watch Company exhibits approximately 230 pieces in the IWC Watch Museum. With this museum, the company aims to provide insight into its history and thus also make part of the history of the city of Schaffhausen accessible to the public.

The Schaffhausen City Library is a study and educational library. The historical collection is located on Münsterplatz.
The Halls for Contemporary Art featured works by internationally renowned artists from the 1960s and 1970s, including Joseph Beuys, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Carl Andre, and Mario Merz. The museum has been closed since June 2014.
