Connects the Vienna Hütteldorf train station (formerly Hütteldorf-Hacking), opened in 1858, with Hacking in the 13th district of Hietzing. Originally a wooden footbridge, from 1898 a footbridge with an iron structure. Rebuilt in 1966 as a T-beam jetty. From 1993 to 1994, the architects Henke & Schreieck carried out a conversion, whereby the footbridge received a glass roof and an elevator at the station. This conversion was awarded the Adolf Loos State Prize for Architecture. In 2009, an elevator was also installed on the Hackinger Ufer.

Hacking and Hütteldorf have been connected by a wooden bridge over the Wien River since 1878. In 1898 this was replaced by the iron structure of the Magdalenenstege. At the end of the 1960s there was a new building in the form of a steel plate construction. The bridge was open on one side. In bad weather, passers-by had difficulty crossing the bridge

    Najczęściej zadawane pytania

What makes the Hackinger Steg architecturally significant?

The Hackinger Steg is an award-winning architectural landmark. Its significant renovation between 1993 and 1994, led by architects Henke & Schreieck, introduced a distinctive glass roof and integrated elevators, particularly on the train station side. This modern design was honored with the prestigious Adolf-Loos-Staatspreis for Architecture, making it a notable example of contemporary urban infrastructure.

Are there any specific viewpoints or natural features directly accessible from the Hackinger Steg bridge?

While the bridge itself offers views of the Wienfluss (Vienna River) and the surrounding urban landscape, its primary role is as a gateway to natural features. It serves as an excellent starting point for accessing the Lainzer Tiergarten, a large wildlife preserve and recreational area, where numerous natural viewpoints and trails await just a short walk away.

What are the best public transport options to reach Hackinger Steg?

The Hackinger Steg is exceptionally well-connected by public transport. It directly links to the Wien Hütteldorf train station, which is a major hub. You can easily reach the bridge via regional trains (S-Bahn), U-Bahn (U4 line), and various bus and tram lines that serve the Hütteldorf area.

Is the Hackinger Steg area suitable for a winter hike, and how crowded does it get?

Yes, the Hackinger Steg and its surrounding trails, especially into the Lainzer Tiergarten, can be suitable for winter hikes, offering a different, often serene, experience. The bridge itself is covered, providing shelter. While specific crowd data isn't available, winter generally sees fewer visitors than peak seasons, making it a good time for a quieter experience. Always check trail conditions for snow or ice before heading out.

Are there family-friendly hiking trails near Hackinger Steg, particularly within the Lainzer Tiergarten?

Absolutely. The Hackinger Steg provides direct access to the Lainzer Tiergarten, which offers a variety of trails suitable for families. Many paths within the Tiergarten are relatively flat and well-maintained, perfect for leisurely walks with children. Look for routes that are clearly marked as easy or moderate, and consider shorter loops to match your family's pace.

Are dogs allowed on the trails accessible from Hackinger Steg, especially in the Lainzer Tiergarten?

Dogs are generally not permitted within the Lainzer Tiergarten itself, as it is a wildlife preserve. However, there are paths along the Wienfluss outside the Tiergarten boundaries where dogs on a leash are usually welcome. Always check local regulations and signage for specific restrictions before bringing your dog.

What are some popular hiking trails directly accessible from Hackinger Steg, including their difficulty and elevation?

From Hackinger Steg, you can directly access the Lainzer Tiergarten, which is a starting point for numerous trails. Popular routes include paths leading towards the Hermesvilla or the Hubertuswarte. Trails within the Tiergarten vary from easy, relatively flat forest paths to more moderate ascents with gentle elevation gains, typically ranging from 100 to 300 meters over several kilometers. Specific difficulty and elevation depend on your chosen route within the extensive network.

Are permits required for hiking in the Lainzer Tiergarten when accessing from Hackinger Steg?

No, generally, no specific permits are required for hiking within the Lainzer Tiergarten. Access is free during opening hours. However, it's important to note that the Tiergarten has strict rules regarding opening times, designated paths, and prohibited activities (like cycling or bringing dogs), as it is a protected wildlife area. Always respect the park's regulations.

Are there cafes, pubs, or accommodation options within walking distance of Hackinger Steg?

Yes, due to its proximity to Wien Hütteldorf train station and the residential areas of Hietzing, you'll find several cafes, pubs, and restaurants within walking distance. There are also various accommodation options, from hotels to guesthouses, catering to different budgets, making it convenient to stay nearby before or after your outdoor activities.

What is the historical significance of the Hackinger Steg?

The connection across the Wienfluss at Hacking has a long history, dating back to at least 1878 with a wooden walkway. It evolved through an iron truss structure in 1898 (incorporating parts of the Magdalenensteg) and a new slab-beam bridge in 1966. Its most recent transformation in the 1990s, which added its distinctive modern features, cemented its place as both a functional crossing and an architectural landmark.

What should I wear for a walk or hike starting from Hackinger Steg?

Given that Hackinger Steg is a gateway to outdoor activities, especially hiking in the Lainzer Tiergarten, it's advisable to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. Dress in layers suitable for the weather conditions, as temperatures can vary. Even for a casual stroll, sturdy footwear is recommended, and if heading into the Tiergarten, consider bringing water and perhaps a light snack.
