Kilden was designed by Finnish ALA Architects in collaboration with Norwegian SMS Arkitekter. Its most striking feature is the undulating front façade made of over 14,000 CNC-milled solid oak planks, which creates a dramatic visual effect. The other three facades are characterized by dark aluminum or stained metal sheets, complementing the oak wall. The design is celebrated for ingeniously integrating the performance halls for efficient operation.
Kilden houses four main venues: a 1,200-seat concert hall known for its state-of-the-art acoustics, a 700-seat theater hall for drama, opera, and musicals, a studio stage for experimental theater, and a flexible multi-purpose hall. Additionally, Kilden utilizes the unique Fjæreheia amphitheater, an outdoor venue in an old quarry with a 970-seat capacity, for summer performances.
Kilden is situated on Odderøya at the entrance to Kristiansand's harbor. The area offers scenic views, especially from the opposite western bank, which provides a panoramic perspective of the building. Odderøya itself is a popular recreational area with walking paths and historical sites. The city center of Kristiansand with its shops, cafes, and restaurants is also within easy reach.
Kilden is well-integrated into Kristiansand's public transport network. Several bus lines serve the area, with stops conveniently located within walking distance of the center. For specific routes and schedules, it's best to check local public transport information upon arrival in Kristiansand.
While Kilden is primarily a performing arts venue, its foyer is a welcoming space with a restaurant and bar, suitable for families to relax. The architecture itself is often fascinating for children. Many of the performances are suitable for various age groups, and Kilden occasionally hosts specific family-oriented events or workshops. The surrounding Odderøya area also offers easy walking routes and green spaces for outdoor family activities.
Yes, Kilden Performing Arts Centre is designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. The building provides easy access throughout its public areas, including performance halls, the foyer, and facilities, ensuring a comfortable experience for all visitors.
While dogs are generally not permitted inside the Kilden Performing Arts Centre itself (unless service animals), the surrounding Odderøya area offers numerous dog-friendly walking paths. You can enjoy a stroll with your canine companion along the harbor and through the natural areas of Odderøya, often with scenic views of Kilden and the city.
For the most iconic photographs of Kilden, many visitors recommend heading to the opposite western bank of the harbor. From there, you can capture the entire structure, including its distinctive oak façade, against the backdrop of the water and Kristiansand. The building's modern aesthetic also makes for interesting close-up shots of its architectural details.
The name 'Kilden' means 'the source' in Norwegian. It was chosen in 2006 to reflect the center's role as a vibrant source of artistic expression and cultural development for the Sørlandet region. The institution itself was established in 2003, bringing together various performing arts organizations under one roof.
Absolutely! Kilden's impressive architecture and public spaces, including the foyer with its restaurant and bar, are open to visitors. Many people come simply to admire the building's design, enjoy the atmosphere, or have a meal or drink. You can explore the interior and appreciate its unique blend of art and architecture without attending a show.
Yes, Kilden itself has a restaurant and bar within its foyer, which often extends to outdoor seating areas depending on the season. Additionally, due to its prime location by the harbor and proximity to Kristiansand city center, there are several cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating options along the waterfront and in the nearby streets, perfect for enjoying the views.
