The town hall was built between 1526 and 1552 after the town fire of 1526 had destroyed the previous building.
From 1914 to 1917 a renovation took place according to plans by Otto Stiehl, in which, among other things, east and west gables were added and the arcades were opened to the arcades. The last comprehensive renovation to date took place in 1998-1999.

The town hall in Gardelegen was first mentioned in 1241 as a Kauf- and Schauhaus. After several fires it was rebuilt in the years 1526-1552. In 1706 it received its Hausmannsturm with double Leterne on an older substructure of the 16th century. From 1914 to 1918 it was rebuilt to plans by Otto Stiehl. From this construction phase come among other things east and west gable. The wooden door of 1916 served during the First World War as Benagelungswahrzeichen: Citizens could earn a nail for a donation and hit the door.
