                          Mainz's old town is a fascinating district that impresses with its rich history and vibrant culture. Characterized by winding streets, historic buildings and numerous sights, the old town offers a unique experience for every visitor.

                          One of the outstanding buildings is the Mainz Cathedral, whose roots go back to the 10th century. The imposing building is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture and a landmark of the city. In the immediate vicinity are the Gutenberg Museum, which sheds light on the history of book printing and the life of Johannes Gutenberg, as well as the Electoral Palace, a magnificent Renaissance building that is now used for various events.

                          A walk through the old town leads to other historical treasures such as the Augustinerkirche, a Rococo church with magnificent ceiling paintings, and the remains of the Roman Theater, which once had space for 10,000 spectators. The citadel on the edge of the old town is home to the Drusus Stone, a monument from Roman times.

                          The charming squares and alleys, such as the Kirschgarten with its half-timbered houses and the lively Augustinerstrasse, invite you to stroll and linger. There are also numerous boutiques, restaurants and cafés here that underline the special character of Mainz's old town.

                          After the Second World War, the old town was largely in ruins and was rebuilt in the decades that followed with great attention to detail. Today it shines in all its glory again and offers a successful mix of historical heritage and modern life.

                                      History and culture, prosperity and decline of the last 2000 years are reflected when walking through the old town. Here, bordered by the course of the former fortification ring, which ran from the Kaisertor in the north via today's Kaiserstraße and the main station to the citadel in the south, the city of Mainz has its origins. "Mogontiacum", "Aurea Moguntia" - the old city names and designations still live on today in the memory of the former capital of Upper Germania of the Roman Empire.

                                      War and destruction have struck Mainz again and again over two millennia - most severely in the years between 1942 and 1945 during the Second World War. Almost the entire city area lay in ruins at that time. Today, much has been lovingly rebuilt and restored. It is lively on Augustinerstraße, along the banks of the Rhine or on market days in front of the impressive backdrop of St. Martin's Cathedral.

                                        Altstadt is a district of the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz. It essentially comprises the parts that date back to the founding of individual Roman vicii from 13/12 BC near Mogontiacum or that were located within the city walls until the city expanded in the 1870s.

                                        Today's district was created in 1989 with the division of the former inner city district into Oberstadt, Neustadt, Altstadt and Hartenberg-Münchfeld. The Mainz-Altstadt district is bordered by the Rhine, the Mainz/Weisenau district boundary, Weisenauer Straße up to the railway line, Eisgrubweg, Kästrich, Martinsstraße, Mathildenstraße, Terrassenstraße, Alicenstraße, Parcusstraße, Kaiserstraße up to the Rhine. The buildings on both sides of the streets Kästrich, Martinsstraße and Mathildenstraße are assigned to the Mainz-Oberstadt district, even if they have the postcode of the Altstadt (55116) and are located within the former city walls.[1]

                                        The districts that belong to the old town include the Bleichenviertel, the Schlossviertel, the Stefansberg, the area below the Kupferbergterrasse, the Lauterenviertel, the Winterhafen and the "classic" old town, which is bordered by Ludwigstrasse, Brand, Rheinstrasse, Holzhofstrasse and Weißliliengasse. The Weintorstrassenviertel, which is considered idyllic, is also located here.

                                        The old town is, alongside Mainz-Lerchenberg, which was newly built in the 1960s, one of the two smallest districts of Mainz in terms of area, with 2.4 square kilometers and has the second highest population density in the city after the Mainz-Neustadt district.
