Construction of Oviedo Cathedral began in the late 13th century with the chapter house and cloister, and its construction lasted three centuries until the tower was completed in the mid-16th century. An ambulatory was later added in the 17th century, in addition to various chapels attached to the side aisles.

In the Camara Santa, the sacred chamber that is part of the cathedral complex, a silver shrine contains the Shroud of Oviedo, thorns from Christ's crown of thorns and fragments of the cross. These important relics led medieval pilgrims to plan a visit to Oviedo, even if the city was not on the direct route to Santiago. There was a saying that said that one had to pass by the Savior on one's pilgrimage: "He who goes to Santiago and not to Salvador visits the servant and not the master."
