The Ciumarna Pass forms the eastern transition to Bukovina. Bukovina (German also Buchenland, Romanian Bucovina, Ukrainian Bukowyna) is a historical landscape in the border area between Central, Southeast and Eastern Europe. The northern half belongs to Ukraine. The southern half belongs to Romania. Here are also the Vltava monasteries, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Like Bessarabia to the east, Bukovina was part of the historic Principality of Moldova for centuries. From 1775 to 1918 the area with its multi-ethnic population belonged to the Habsburg monarchy. East Galicia lies to the north-west and Transylvania to the south-west.
