The church of this monastery, which looks exactly like the neighboring one of Sucevița, is one of the churches in Moldova which have the particularity of displaying exterior and interior wall paintings in the Byzantine style.
Thick surrounding walls six meters high and defensive towers protect this monastic complex. The paintings tell a passage from the Bible that can be understood by the illiterate. Among other things, we find on the south facade of the building, a tree of Jesse where Christ is framed by philosophers of antiquity such as Homer, Aristotle, Plato or Socrates. Hence its name “philosophers’ frieze”.

Moldovita Monastery is one of the eight painted churches included on UNESCO World Heritage Sites, all masterpieces inspired by the Byzantine art of the 15th and 16th centuries. Their distinctive element – the external walls covered with frescoes representing complete religious cycles – makes them unique in the myriad of churches built anywhere in the world in that time.
Their spiritual function was supported by their political and educational role that aimed to defend and strengthen the Orthodox Church in a time when both Protestantism and Islamism were at the borders of the medieval Romanian provinces.
