In July 2005, this sculpture by José João Brito was inaugurated, paying tribute to the families and victims of the sinking of four trawlers that occurred in 1947 and killed 152 fishermen.

The Shipwreck of December 2, 1947 was the largest maritime disaster that occurred on the Portuguese coast, in the region of Matosinhos, where 152 sailors lost their lives. In 2005, the monument "Tragedy of the Sea" was inaugurated on Matosinhos beach, a sculpture in honor of the 1947 shipwreck, about three meters high, composed of five figures of orphans and widows whose faces show the tragedy that occurred in 1947. It was sculpted by José João Brito who based himself on the canvas of the same name created by Mestre Augusto Gomes.
