In 1961, the French abbey of Solesmes founded the monastery of Keur Moussa, some 50 km from Dakar. The monastery, inhabited by Benedictine monks, is known for its Sunday masses, during which the monks cultivate the art of Gregorian chant and supplement it with local melodies and instruments. It is sung, danced and drummed and played on the Kora. The instrument consists of a calabash (a type of pumpkin), has 21 strings and is plucked with both hands. People used to turn the strings from the skin of an antelope. Today they are made of nylon. Every day at 5.30 pm a vesper takes place, during which one can experience the Kora (a kind of bridge harp) and the Gregorian chants of the monks. A wonderful and memorable experience that should not be missed. In addition, the gardens of the monastery are worth a visit. In addition to fruits and vegetables you will also find a variety of flowers and citrus fruits, which you can also buy in the monastery shop.
